Gerry Low has been participating in advanced driver training programs since 1977. It began with 5 years as a student of John Powell at Mosport, Shannonville and the Department of Transportation Canada’s Blainville test facility. By 1982 he started the BMW Club of Canada Advanced Driving School Program along with a small group of fellow BMW Club drivers. Almost thirty years later Gerry now looks back at a very wide range of driving experiences and teaching, which places him as a highly sought after driver, enthusiast and coach.
Club chapters with schools at their local tracks have benefitted from Gerry’s instruction at facilities such as Alberta’s Racecity, Nova Scotia’s Atlantic Motorsport Park and Quebec’s LeCircuit at Mont Tremblant. He has participated as an instructor with American BMW Chapters in New York, Ohio, and Virginia and frequently dropped in to drive and instruct at some of the great Eastern American tracks at Watkin’s Glen, Mid-Ohio and Virginia International Raceway. He and John met during the mid 1980’s and a mutual friendship was born of the sheer enjoyment of spending simmer days honing their own skills and instructing at these tracks.
Gerry has also taught with other major car clubs such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Saab, and Porsche at Conn Valley, First Settlers and Northeast chapters. He instructs privately for Porsche with Apex Driver Training, with Audi and with BMW. Most recently he’s been busy as a coach for the Ariel Atom Experience at Shannonville, Chicago’s Autobahn and at Virginia International Raceway. He is presently the Chief Instructor at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga where he teaches both the 12 month sedan and formula programs. He’s the leader of the classroom sessions.
Other recent automobile related activities include organizing road trip packages to various tracks, as well as comparative tire testing, to report quantitative information over a range of consumer standards and expectations such as dry and wet lateral grip, dry and wet braking, dry and wet noise.
Last year saw Gerry Low teaching at over 130 track days. He drives a 1994 BMW E36 M3 Euro with brake, suspension, tire, structural and engine modifications. His enthusiasm for driving and instructing is evident to all who spend a day at the track with him.
